For imports of food of animal origin from a third country ( a non-EU-country) into the EU, the goods must be inspected at the EU border. Border control inspections are only carried out at one of Sweden’s border inspection posts. A list of goods that must clear border control when being imported into the EU can be found below. Regulations
Swedish National Food Agency regulations on control of food of animal origin imported from third countries (LIVSFS 2004:3).
Advance notice
Advance notice must be given of all consignments due to arrive at a border inspection post. You can find more information on the left, Advance notice of consignments to Sweden's border inspection posts.
Approved country
For food imports from non-EU countries, the countries must be approved by the EU Commission.
Approved establishment
Foods stuffs of animal origin (meat, fish, milk, eggs and products thereof) must come from an EU approved establishment in the country of origin, and be accompanied by a health certificate. Salmonella testing
All consignments containing fresh meat, or minced meat (with the exception of heat treated meat) are subject to salmonella control. You find more information on the left, Salmonella regulations.
Safeguard measures
Certain foods that are subjected to border control must undergo the controls stipulated in the relevant protection decisions. More information to the left, Decisions regarding animal diseases affecting trade within the European Union.
Fees
The basic charge for border control of a consignment containing foods of animal origin is 800 SEK + 0.09 SEK per kg. Fees are higher if the inspection is carried out outside regular office hours. Sampling and analyses based on safeguard measures or suspicion of irregularities, are carried out at the expense of the importer.
