In Sweden, the number of children born with neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, is among the lowest in the world. Every year 80 abortions in Sweden are carried out because of neural tube defects that are detected during ultrasound examinations early in pregnancy. Neural tube defects comprise as much as 25 percent of all abortions done due to a foetal injury.
Folate, or folic acid, is essential for cell division. During pregnancy weeks 3-4 when the spinal cord, nerves and brain are being developed, the folate need is the greatest. A low folate status during this period increases the risk of having a child with a neural tube defect. About folic acid supplements
